Addie Mae (she went by Mae all her adult life) was the second child born into a large family of educators. Aunt Mae taught grade school in Grayson, Louisiana, the town of her birth, from the age of fifteen until she graduated from college, then for the remainder of her life, taught junior high remedial reading; for more than thirty years she taught at Takoma Park Junior High in Takoma Park, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC.
She was a graduate of Louisiana State University and did graduate work at the University of Maryland and West Texas State Teachers College.
At the time of her death, she was seventy-two years old and still taught part-time, plus tutored five days a week during the summer months.
She married Rush R Jemison and they had one daughter, Janice (pronounced Juh-niece). She was granted a divorce from Uncle Rush in Seminole County, Florida in February 1964.
Aunt Mae and Janice moved to Silver Spring, Maryland shortly thereafter. She remained there for about forty years, until her death.
On the evening of March 5, 1971 she was at an award ceremony presented by the junior high school where she taught. While at the podium giving her appreciation speech for receiving the 1970-71 Distinguished Teacher's Award, she was stricken with a cerebral aneurysm; she passed away a few hours later in a Washington, DC hospital.
The world lost a brilliant, wonderful educator who was loved dearly by faculty and students alike for better than fifty-seven years. Aunt Mae is dearly loved and missed. ❤
