Louisiana Governor. After graduating with a law degree from Louisiana State University in 1942, he served as a Lieutenant with distinction in the 77th Infantry Division, U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater of Operation. After the war, he started a successful law practice in Columbia, Louisiana. Entering politics, he served as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, (1948-52) and as the Louisiana Public Service Commission, (1954-64). In 1964, he was elected as a Democrat the 49th Governor of Louisiana, serving until 1972. During his two terms, he worked tirelessly approving the State's economic development and grained support for the construction of the Superdome in New Orleans. He also served on the National Governors Association's Executive Committee and appointed the first African-Americans to judgeships in New Orleans. After leaving office he retired from politics, continued practicing law and managed an oil and gas exploration company until his death. In 1993, McKeithen was inducted into the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame.
