Sgt.Casey Byers, 22, of Schleswig, Iowa; was assigned to the 224th Engineer Battalion, Iowa Army National Guard, Ottumwa, Iowa; killed June 11 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle in Taqaddum, Iraq. Also killed was Sgt. 1st Class Neil A. Prince. Two days before his funeral, his brother, Spc. Paul Byers was hit by a pickup and was killed. Casey was awarded six medals, including the Bronze Star. Casey never got to meet his infant daughter, Hailey. He was 22.
