Sgt. Randy J. Matheny, 20, of McCook, Neb.; was assigned to the 1074th Transportation Company, Nebraska National Guard, Sidney, Neb.; He died Feb. 4 in Baghdad of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He transferred to the Sidney-based 1074th Transportation Co. in June 2006 as a heavy vehicle driver, and was mobilized for duty in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom on July 15, 2006. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Cecil Matheny and Joe Alexander. Randy is survived by his parents; father, Gary Matheny and fiancée, Kay Chambers, of Oberlin, Kansas; mother, Jan Collins and husband, Duane Collins of McCook; his fiancée, Courteney Gibson, of McCook; brother, Paul and wife, Christine Matheny, stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas; sisters, Karen Matheny, currently stationed at Camp Anaconda, Iraq, Laci and husband Jason Ingels, of McCook, and Kori Collins and boyfriend, Zach Randolph, of Omaha; grandparents, Freida Matheny of Oberlin, Kansas, Myrna and Larry Lacina of Westminster, Colorado, Margot Alexander of Broomfield, Colorado; great-grandmother, Hazel Flaska of Oberlin, Kansas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Randy is also survived by many life-long friends that are too numerous to mention.
