Clock maker, Pioneer in the manufacture of the tall eight-day clock and Member of Pennsylvania state legislature;
Member of the general assembly of Pennsylvania 1797-1802; elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jacob Spangler; re-elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth Congress and served from November 16, 1818, until March 3, 1821.
He was a fine clockmaker and it is said he made over 100 tall case clocks.
He trained his son Jacob Junior as a clockmaker and later followed him to New Lisbon some time around 1824 where they both continued clockmaking until his death in 1831 (age about 77 years).
