When she was 8 years old, her father decided to take advantage of the Timber and stone Act of 1878 which allowed people to purchase land for $2.50 and acre. the land was deemed unfit for farming. Her father purchased 160 acre claim 5 miles from Lake Itasca. She traveled with her parents and older brother Jim in a horse drawn covered wagon in May of 1886 to Northern MN. to their homestead.
They lived in a log cabin made of wood logs, nails, mud and hay. Cheese cloth lined the inside to keep out the mosquittos. They owned a barn to keep their horses in.
She grew up and taught school in the Alida area and also in Shelving.
On October 7, 1905 she married William McCrehin, an Irishman from Dudley Township. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War and fought in the battle of San Isadore. They had 4 children; Loren, Ellen, Lloyd, and Ralph.
William was a school teacher also. He taught in Alida area also and the log school at Leonard. Her husband, William formed a business partnership with Reuben Holm and owned the Mccrehin and Holm's General Store and lumberyard. Later it became the McCrehin General Store.
Nellie was a visual, one who watched over caskets overnight. People kept their caskets of their loved ones in a kitchen or living room before the funeral. Nellie was a ghost story teller.
Her husband died of Brights disease in 1918 and they were only married for 13 years. When he died, she was appointed postmistress in his place and operated the general store for many years with help from her son, Loren.
She later married Oscar Jones and then was separated in the 1930's but lived next to him for many years afterwards.
Nellie passed away Oct 5, 1961 and was buried at East Zion Cemetery , rural Leonard beside her first husband, William.
