William Hughes served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He entered the Continental Army in the state of Virginia in 1777 and rendered service as a Private under Captain Nathaniel Fox's company, commanded by Lt.Col. Charles Simms. His service took him through most of the major battles in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, including the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. He was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown.
