Musician. A native of Walthamstow, London, he was a founding member of the 1960s British rock group The Dave Clark Five (DC5). A versatile musician, Payton played the saxophone, harmonica and guitar. The group formed in Tottenham, England in 1960 and was one of the main rivals of The Beatles with such songs as "Glad All Over", "Bits and Pieces", "Because" and "Catch Us If You Can". They disbanded in 1973. In 2008, Payton was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Dave Clark Five.
