Robert E. "Bob" Grace, a retired teacher, coach and administrator in Jennings and longtime state track and field official, died Wednesday (April 26, 2006) at Big Bend Woods Healthcare Center in Valley Park of complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 77 and lived in Fenton.

Mr. Grace was born in St. Louis. He joined the Army shortly after his high school graduation and served three years.

Mr. Grace earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.

Mr. Grace joined the Jennings School District in 1951. He taught health, physical education and drivers education and coached basketball, golf and track at Jennings High School for 16 years.

In 1967, he became the activities director at the school. He oversaw all athletics and other activities for more than a decade. He later took an administrative position with the district in which he supervised all noncertified personnel. He retired in 1981.

Mr. Grace later worked several years as the head of the maintenance department for the Hazelwood School District.

Mr. Grace served as a state track and field official with the Missouri State High School Activities Association for more than 30 years. He helped develop the rules and regulations for the events and, as manager and director of state high school meets in Missouri, he presided over track and field events and championships throughout the area.

Mr. Grace was a member of the Missouri State Track and Field Hall of Fame and served on a national track and field rules committee for several years.

Interment was private.

Among survivors are his wife of almost 55 years, Betty J. McKeehan Grace of Fenton; a son, Jeff Grace of Eureka; a daughter, Melissa Grace of Fenton; and two grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rockwood Summit High School Scholarship Fund, 1780 Hawkins Road, Fenton, Mo. 63026.
