From the book The Churchill Family in America:

"Born July 20, 1716; d. in N.S. abt. 1800. He lived in Plymouth until about the time of the Revolution, when having lost his property he removed to Nova Scotia and lived at 'Ragged Islands,' now Lockport [six]. His wife did not go to Nova Scotia with him. Married, 1741, Patience Harlow, daughter of Eleazer and Hannah (Pratt) Harlow, of Plympton."

From the Lockeport, Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada website Home Page on June 2, 2014:

"The original settlers of Lockeport, which was known for a long time as Ragged Islands, were Dr. Jonathan Locke of Chillmark, Mass., and Josiah Churchill who arrived here in approximately 1761."

According to Wikipedia on June 2, 2014:

"In 1762, two families from Massachusetts journeyed to Nova Scotia in an effort to find a new colony that was closer to the rich fishing grounds of the Grand Banks. When they found the sheltered Allendale Bay, they knew they had found a gem in the rough. Situated halfway between the colonies in New England and the fishing grounds, their new town would be a centre for both fishing and trade.

"The patriarchs of those first two families, Jonathan Locke and Josiah Churchill, went on to become the captains of industry in the area. Churchill became the first mayor of the Township of Locke's Island (registered in Liverpool in 1764)."

Research undertaken during a visit to the Lockeport Historical Society by this writer on June 2, 2014 indicates that Josiah Churchill landed in Ragged Islands looking for a good place to dry fish during the summer months. It is reasonable to believe that he traveled back to Plymouth during the harsh winter months, spending summers in Nova Scotia. His youngest and last child, Silvanus, must have been conceived around April, 1764 since he was born on January 23, 1765, lending credence to this theory of a seasonal commute to and from Nova Scotia.
