The date of birth in this memorial is a calculated date based on her having died on August 2, 1869 at the age of 74 years. 4 months and 15 days. No vital records have been found indicating either her date of birth or date of death despite diligent searches undertaken by the creator of this memorial during trips to Plymouth and Taunton, Massachusetts, as well as Woonsocket and Providence, Rhode Island.

Esther Churchill was the daughter of Samuel Churchill and Elizabeth Churchill, both of whom were the grandchildren of common grandparents (Eliezer Churchill and Mary Bryant, their 2nd great grandparents).

No vital records identifying Esther's parents have been found, despite the diligent searches mentioned above. There are only a few published sources identifying her parents. They are: the Genealogical Register of Plymouth Families, pp. 68, 307-8, 312; The Nova Scotia Churchills by George R. Churchill (2008), p. 434; and The Churchill Family in America, Edited by George M. Dodge, pp. 54-56.

The foregoing sources are strengthened significantly by the naming patterns among the children of Esther's siblings as well as Esther herself. Esther's first-born daughter was named Lucy Rhodes Collins (1821-1914).

Lucy's middle name "Rhodes" is not to be found in either the Churchill or Collins ancestry. But Esther's older sister, Lucy Churchill (1788-1870), married Zachariah Blowers Rhodes 2 years before the birth of Lucy Rhodes Collins. There are vital records establishing that Esther's older sister, Lucy Churchill, was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth. It seems beyond dispute that Esther named her first-born daughter after recently-married sister Lucy Rhodes.

Esther's son, the Reverend Caleb Churchill Collins (1831 – 1906} likely was named after Captain Caleb Churchill (1782-1870), Esther's brother).

Esther's other older sister, Deborah Churchill Vose (1793-1872), who married Joseph Vose, named several of her children after members of Samuel's and Elizabeth's extended family. Those children of Deborah's were:

Almera Churchill Vose (1818-1892) (named after Almira Weston (1799-1898), the niece of Deborah's and Esther's mother Elizabeth (i.e., the daughter of Mary Churchill Vose, Elizabeth's sister (she married William Weston)).

Elizabeth Churchill Vose (1818-1892) (named after Deborah's and Esther's mother, Elizabeth Churchill).

Jeremiah Mendall Vose (1822-1896) (named after Mendall Churchill (1788- 1832), Deborah's and Esther's older brother who, in turn, was named after Mendall Churchill (1760-1835), Deborah's and Esther's maternal uncle, their mother Elizabeth's brother).

Esther Collins Vose (1824-1897) (named after Deborah's younger sister, Esther Churchill, the subject of this memorial (she married Albert Johnson)).

Esther Collins married Samuel Avery Collins on October 7, 1816. According to some Massachusetts records, their marriage was solemnized by the Reverend Adoniram Judson in that year. That record conflicts with the apparently reliable reports that the Reverend was in Burma in 1816 as a missionary. This conflict needs to be resolved.

The question of Esther's parentage has been explored at length in The Mayflower Descendant, 65 (Winter 2017): 37-49, “THE PARENTS OF ESTHER CHURCHILL (1795-1869), WIFE OF SAMUEL AVERY COLLINS OF PLYMOUTH, EASTON, RANDOLPH, AND TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS” by Charles Carter Morgan.
