St. Mark's Lutheran Church
Kansas City Register of Historic Places
St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 3800 Troost
(Hyde Park neighborhood)
Dedicated 16 Jan 1916

Saint Mark's Lutheran Church is a two-story, limestone, Gothic Revival style structure with an attached three-story, half-timber and stucco, Tudor style parsonage built under the leadership of Pastor Andreas Bard. Dr. Bard brought his congregation from their former 14th & Cherry location & was instrumental in changing their name from the First English Lutheran Church to Saint Mark's Lutheran Church.

Bio
Dr. Bard became one of the most recognized pastors in the Kansas City area & beyond, not only for his sermons but also for his writings, which expressed his interests in philosophy, theology, science, music and drama. In 1950, after 41 years in the ministry, Dr. Bard retired from St. Mark's. His greatest achievement was perhaps the unprecedented growth of his church's membership during his tenure from approximately two hundred members to nearly one thousand members.

Retiring to Manhattan Beach, California, Dr. Bard continued preaching each Sunday for many years as a guest preacher in Southern California churches.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Schwarze Bard, whom he lost to colon cancer in 1949; and survived by their daughter, Helen Bard Hadley, and by his second wife, Norma Wasson Bard.
