Franklin served as a Staff Sergeant & Waist Gunner on B-17G #43-38445, 325th Bomber Squadron, 92nd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 15, 1943 in Huntington, West Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the building transportation equipment and also as Single, without dependents.

Franklin was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was hit by enemy flak and was then involved in a mid-air collision with B-17G #43-38396 and crashed near Neuhof, Germany during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.

At the families request, his state of birth was added to his headstone (West Virginia) instead of his state of residence (Maryland).
