March 8-9 Night, Rocket and Mortor fire all along 4th Division lines There was a noticeable increase in Japanese activity in front of the 24th Marines during the early evening, and enemy mortar, rocket, and artillery fire mounted in intensity. At 2300, the 2d Battalion, 23d Marines and the 3d Battalion, 24th reported large-scale infiltration attempts along the regimental boundary in the area of the salient. Then at 2330, a full-scale counterattack hit Company E, 2/23.
