Louisa Maria Russell was the daughter of Solomon and Charlotte Russell of Greenwich, New York. On Oct. 19, 1865 she married George Miller Sternberg in Cooperstown, New York. At the time, Dr. Miller was a surgeon in the U.S. assigned to Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis Missouri. In 1866 he was transferred to Fort Harker in Kansas and Louisa joined him there on May 26, 1867, just in time for a cholera epidemic that broke out in late June of that year. Being the doctor's wife, she assisted in the care of his patients and was one of the first victims of the disease. She died on July 15, 1867 and was buried in the post cemetery.
In his report, Sternberg wrote stoically that "One of the ladies of the garrison died on cholera on the 15th of July."
It is unknown if her remains were removed along with those of the soldiers buried there when they were moved to National Military cemeteries between 1885 and 1907, but it is doubtful.
