George Fryer Sternberg was born August 26, 1883, in Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas, to Charles Hazelius and Anna Margaret (Reynolds) Sternberg. He was named, in part, after his uncle, General George Miller Sternberg, a military doctor who became the Surgeon General of the Army during the Spanish American War.
George first married Mabel Smith on December 31, 1907. They had three children, Charles W. (Oct. 18, 1908- June 26, 1994), Margery Anna (Nov. 25, 1909 - Nov. 21, 1911) and Ethyl May (1913-2004). The Sternbergs were divorced in 1926 and George married a widow, Anna Gertrude Ziegler, on October 11, 1930.
Sternberg died October 23, 1969, in a care home in Hays, Kansas. Social Security information, however, has recorded that his death occurred in New Hanover, North Carolina, where his son, Charles W. Sternberg, and daughter-in-law were living. He is buried in Hays, Kansas.
