Orphaned as a young child, Benjamin was raised in St. Louis by his uncle, Governor William Clark. He first operated a mill, & then became an Indian agent & trader. He received the title of Major when he was made Indian Agent for the Upper Missouri in 1819. He went with Stephen Long's expedition to the Yellowstone River as far as Council Bluff, where he had his headquarters. He was the brother of noted St. Louis philanthropist John O'Fallon.
