Actor. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, he was fondly remembered for the lead role of Admiral Harriman Nelson on the TV series "Voyage To the Bottom Of the Sea". He began his career in Hollywood, making his big screen debut in "Repeat Performance" (1947), followed by "Cry Wolf" (1947). His many other film credits included: "He Walked by Night" (1948), "The House on Telegraph Hill" (1951), "Fourteen Hours" (1951), "Titanic" (1953), "La Strada" (1954), "Moby Dick" (1956), "Time Limit" (1957), "Portrait in Black" (1960), "Chato's Land" (1972), "Rage" (1972) and "Being There" (1979). For television, he also appeared on "The Twilight Zone", "Gunsmoke", "Hawaii Five-O", "Combat!", "Columbo", "Little House on the Prairie" and "Knight Rider." Noted for his deep, distinctive voice, he was also prolific as a narrator of many television and movie projects ranging from features to documentaries, lending his voice to reading the Greek poem "Ode to Olympians" by Pindar during the closing ceremony of the 1984 Summer Olympics. He died of a stroke at age 70 in Los Angeles, California. He was married 3 times: Stephanie Klein from 1940 to 1950, actress Valentina Cortese from 1951 to 1960, with a son Jackie, and Diana Lotery in 1962 with two daughters, Jenna and Gayla.
