Actor. Born Richard Hanley Jaeckel in Long Beach, Long Island, New York, he was a popular character actor in films and television for over fifty years. He began his career at the age of seventeen while working as a mailboy at 20th Century-Fox, making his debut in the film "Guadalcanal Diary" (1943). After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to the screen in "Battleground" (1949), followed by "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949). His more than 35 film credits include: "The Gunfighter" (1950), "Come Back, Little Sheba" (1952), "The Violent Men" (1955), "Attack! (1956), "3:10 to Yuma" (1957), "Cowboy" (1958), "The Naked and the Dead" (1958), "The Gallant Hours" (1960), "Flaming Star" (1960), "Town Without Pity" (1961), "The Dirty Dozen" (1967), "The Devil's Brigade" (1968), "Chisum" (1970), "Ulzana's Raid" (1972), "The Outfit" (1973), "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" (1973), "The Drowning Pool" (1975), "Walking Tall Part 2" (1975), "Grizzly" (1976), "Twilight's Last Gleaming" (1977), "Starman" (1984), "Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection" (1990) and "Martial Outlaw" (1993). In 1971, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Sometimes a Great Notion." For TV, he made appearances in "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Perry Mason," "The Rebel," "Have Gun, Will Travel," "The Wild Wild West," "Bonanza," "Combat!," "Mission: Impossible," "Gunsmoke," "Public Defender," "The Oregon Trail," "Centennial," "Baywatch" and "Spenser: For Hire." In 1992, he received the Golden Boot Award for his work in Westerns. He met and married Antoinette Marches. They were married from 1947 until her death in 1994 from Alzheimer's disease. Their son is professional golfer Barry Jaeckel.
