Civil War Union Army Officer. He was comissioned as Captain and commander of Company A, 103rd New York Infantry on January 4, 1862. He quickly rose in ranks, being promoted to Major on April 4, 1862, and to Colonel and regimental commander on September 15, 1862. During the May 1864 operations against Confederate forces under General James Longstreet around Suffolk, Virginia, he was mortally wounded in the chest while leading his men on May 3, 1863, dying a few hours later.
