Civil War Union Army Officer. Served in the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry, rising from a mere private to Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the regiment. He was a Brigadier General in command of the Rhode Island State Militia from 1879 to 1893. His diaries and letters were later published and widely featured in Ken Burns' Civil War documentary.
