Jim was born in Jones County, Mississippi to William Wesley Thomas and Ada Marie Jackson. His mother passed away when he was three years old and he was raised by his aunts. He joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 16 and was a Corporal in the Army from May 1953 to May 1955.
Married to his wife Ruby Jewel Kennedy Jackson on March 09, 1953, they shared 52 years of happiness together. They had four children. Daughter, Brenda, predeceaced her father. After leaving the Army he joined the Seafarers International Union and was a Chief Steward for 37 years. The ocean was his home away from home. In his travels around the world by ship he witnessed of his life with the Lord to all the people he encountered. In 1959 at the Port Houston Baptist Church he dedicated his life to his Lord and Saviour. He served as a Sunday school teacher and church usher. He joked that he could intimidate church members into giving more offering because of his large size. He was a Deacon at Highlands Lakes Baptist Church and a member of The Baptist Men's Ministry where he
cooked their morning meals before their meetings. He also cooked for several outreach ministry organizations. Working with the Royal Ambassadors Organization was another of his interests. He enjoyed helping others and he took them to doctor's appointments or to run errands. One of his greatest loves was trying to keep up with his grandkids and great-grandkids. They were all buddies at one time or another. He attended local sports events when he could. He was a member of the Gus Brandt Masonic Lodge in Houston, Texas. He was involved in many community and church activities.
