Lee Hampton Webb was borne of the union of Robert Haynes Webb (1840-1910) and Mary Josephine Lattner (1846-?), almost a year before the war between the States ended, on June 27th, 1864, at Shoal Creek (near Parker Store), Hart County, Georgia. He was the eldest of four children in 1870 and eldest of six children in 1880. By 1880, the Webb family had relocated to Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, Georgia, into a new dwelling on a farm. Unfortunately, in the 1880 Census only initials and last names were used in the Censuses, but I've been able to identify four of the six children borne to
Robert Haynes and Mary Josephine Webb:
Lee Hampton, b.1864, Charles Howard, b.1866, James Claud, b.1868, and Mary Esther, b.1870.
There were two sons, W.R. Webb, age 9, b.@1871, and J.B. Webb, age 7, b.@1873, whom I've not been able to identify. Any information regarding these two children would be greatly appreciated. The Census records for 1890 were destroyed in a fire and the next census wasn't taken again until 1900 and during those 20 years many changes took place in the Webb household. Sometime prior to 1900 (@1898), Mary Josephine Webb died, reason unknown. When the 1900 Census was taken on June 9th, 1900, I found that Robert Haynes Webb had just remarried to Mollie C. Purcell, b.Aug 1863 in GA. She brought with her two sons, Ira Purcell, b.Aug 1886, GA., and Clifford Purcell, b.Sep 1889, GA. Robert had sold his farm and now owned a home, mortgage free. He was also a Deputy Clerk for either the city or county and 60 years old, 23 years Mollie's senior. None of his children from his marriage to Mary Josephine were living with him. Lee had married Sarah Willa Gatlin, b.Feb 8th, 1867, in Dooly County (later renamed Crisp County), GA. They married on Dec 18th, 1889 at Houston County, GA. By 1910, they were living in their own home in Cordele, Crisp County, GA., had been married 21 years and were the proud parents of seven children. Willie named three of their daughters after flowers. Their children were: Mary (Marigold) Josephine, b.Sep 3, 1890, Lee, b.May 8th, 1892 [Lee died Nov 27, 1892 and is buried at Sunnyside Cemetery in Cordele, GA.]. Pansy, b.July 8, 1893, John Howard, b.Aug 2, 1897, Charles Fred, b.Feb 2, 1900, Sara Willa, b. Aug 2, 1903, Violet, b.Jan 26, 1905, and Kate W., also born in 1905, possibly a Twin. [Kate is not mentioned after the 1910 Census and I believe that she died prior to 1920].
Lee was a Merchant and had paid the house off so there was no mortgage. Lee died suddenly on Sep 1, 1912 at the age of 48 yrs., which shocked all who knew him**. Willa was a widow at the age of 45 yrs., and would never remarry. Luckily, the house was paid for so she had a home for her 5 or 6 children still living in the household. Willa lived there until Aug 14, 1943, to the age of 76 yrs.
She was interred next to her beloved husband she had lost 31 long years ago at Sunnyside Cemetery in Cordele, Georgia. She and her husband and children will never be separated from each other again.
**I believe that my ancestor died from a deadly type of heart attack, referred to as a "Triple A", which is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. It is sudden and deadly, as well as genetic in nature.
