Businessman, Industrialist, Philanthropist. He is best known as the founder of the United States Steel Corporation (known today as the USX Corporation) and for a number of years in the early 20th century was the wealthiest man in America. Through his philanthropy, he gave away 90% of his fortune, funding over 3,000 public and university libraries and endowing, among others: Carnegie Hall, Carnegie Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Carnegie Foundation, Tuskegee Institute, and a trust benefitting the universities of Scotland. Because of Carnegie's love of his Scottish heritage, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the only institution of higher learning in the United States that offers a bagpiping music major.
