I bought Sooty from a petshop in August of 1977. I used to love going in pet shops as a little girl. I still do now, years later! I was the one to take in pets that the local pet shop owner couldnt sell. I used to tame vicious hamsters, and take in Rabbits and guineapigs. Anyway, I digress....

One particular day I decided that I would go and get a kitten without my parents knowledge. I knew my dad wouldnt mind, but I wasnt so sure of mum. So, off I went to Birkenhead to get one. Well, on the way there, I called in at my old dinner lady Annes house. I told her that I was going to buy a kitten, I was so excited!! I had just left school a few months before and we had kept in touch and did so for a time afterwards. Before I left for the pet shop, Anne gave me some money towards buying the kitten.

At the petshop, I saw some beautiful little black kittens. So I bought one, a little boy. He didnt half screech on the way home!!.

When I got him home, my mum wasnt impressed and said I had to take him back, but after a few ahhhhh mummmmm's, she said 'ok, he can stay tonight, but hes going back to that shop tommorow do you hear me?!.

That evening, I went out to get some fish and chips. When I came back, mum said 'That kitten went to escape up the chimney, and I had to drag him out, 'luckily there was no fire set at the time'!! her arms were scratched.. but do you know what? we kept him. I knew mum would want to keep him XD!!.. So that was the night Sooty got his name.

One evening in 1987, sooty was found dead on the garden steps. My brother found him still warm. He had either been knocked by a car and died of shock, or had a heart attack, we didnt know what had happened. By that time I had been married and Expecting my daughter, I was 8 months pregnant at the time.

Its 23 years ago now, but I remember most things clear as day, from when I brought him home, to the shock of hearing he had died.
