He was the son of Paul Albert Sr. and Mary Hesselschwerdt. His mother remarried to a John Schwab.

He enlisted in Company M, 8th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery with his brother John Albert on December 21, 1863. They both fought, and were wounded, at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia on June 3rd, 1864. His brother John died of his wounds the same day. Paul languished for many months, finally passing on January 25, 1865 in a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania due to Pyemia, which is a form of Septicaemia. He was buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery on January 28, 1865..

There is a cenotaph for both him and his brother John on his mother's gravestone in Saint Cecilia's Cemetery, Sheldon, Wyoming County, New York.
