They both fought, and were wounded, at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia on June 3rd, 1864. His brother John died of his wounds the same day. Paul languished for many months, finally passing on January 25, 1865 in a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania due to Pyemia, which is a form of Septicaemia. He was buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery on January 28, 1865..
