Civil War Union Army Officer. He served in the Union Navy during the Civil War as an Acting 3rd Assistant Engineer.

On June 18, 1891 he filed for a US Navy Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #28576, Certificate #15753).

On May 31, 1902 his wife, Jane Agnew, filed for a US Navy Widow's Pension (Application #21591, Certificate #18549).

AGNEW.-On May 18, 1902, JOHN AGNEW, aged 65 years. The relatives and friends
of the family, also the members of Potter Ledge, No. 421,F. and A. M.: St. John’s Chapter,
No. 232, R. A. M.: St. Alban Commandery, No. 47, K. T.: Chippewa Tribe, No. 51, I. O. R. M.:
General U. S. Grant Post, No. 5 G. A.R.: the surviving members of Delaware Engine Co., No. 4.:
the Volunteer Firemen’s Funeral association and employees of G. F. Rothacker’s Brewing Co.,
are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Thursday, 22d inst., at 2 o’clock, from
the late residence 2205 Christian st. Interment at Mount Moriah.
