Charles E. "Charlie" Becker, 78, of Metea, went home to be with the Lord on Monday after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on March 26, 1933, in South Bend, to the late Sylvester and Illie Becker (Neff). He was married on Dec. 31, 1980, to Marilyn Yantis-Cox, who survives.
He was a graduate of Metea High School. Charlie was a United States Army veteran, who served in the Korean Conflict. He was a lifelong farmer and skilled carpenter. Charlie was a devoted member of Gideons International and Metea Baptist Church. He enjoyed going on missionary trips with the church's youth program. Charlie served as a crew leader with World Changer's using his carpentry skills to assist people that were less fortunate. His missionary work took him throughout the world, including Haiti, Guyana, Nicaragua, South Korea and Mexico, and various places within the United States. In his earlier years, he enjoyed coaching softball, and later in retirement he enjoyed woodworking in his workshop.
Charlie was known for his modest disposition and firm handshake, along with his words of wisdom such as "Learn as much as you can about everything you can, because you never know when you may need it," along with "All you take with you when you die is your soul, material things don't matter." During his life he witnessed to many people.
He is preceded in death by his father, Sylvester, and mother, Illie.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; three daughters, Diane (Jack) Zimpleman, Donna (Tim) Corn, and Darla Becker, and step-daughter, Sue (Frank) Hodge; grandchildren, Angie (Paul) Deming, Ryan (Lisa) Zimpleman, Christy Corn, Greg (Camile) Zimpleman, Evan (Nicole) Corn, Laura (Jake) Woolever, Kyle (Eliza) Corn, Nancy Gunter, Sara (Ben) Vangan, and Aaron Gunter; step-grandchildren, Don (Theresa) Hurst and April Hodge; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Gundrum Funeral Home. Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gundrum Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in Metea Cemetery.
