Mom always went by her middle name, Elaine. Her older sister, Pauline did not like her first name, Gladys. She loved the name, Elaine, and called her that until their parents finally gave in and called her Elaine as well.
When daddy decided to purchase their stone, mom did not want to go and seemed uninterested in anything to do with it. Daddy once mentioned burial plots to her mother, Grandma Christena Crouse Hart, and she accused daddy of trying to rush her off. Perhaps that is why mom was not interested; because she felt the same way.
So, on his own, daddy painstakingly designed it . . . that was his way; he planned every detail with a great deal of thought behind it.
Cheri Coffman Watkins owned the monument store and later told me they had so much fun doing that. She said that when most people came in to pick out a stone, their loved one had just died and every little thing would make them cry. With daddy, the two of them laughed, told stories and she learned so much about daddy and our family because of it.
Mom's full name was Gladys Elaine Hart Hagan. Daddy thought that they needed to include at least her first initial, G, as any search for her would include her first name even though she only used it on legal documents, etc. That left no room for her maiden name on the stone. After much contemplation, he decided to have their wedding date placed in a heart to represent her maiden name, Hart. While mom was not at all pleased with that decision, I always thought it was a sweet gesture on his part, and in time, I think she came to think so too. :~D
