Civil War Confederate Major General. At the beginning of the Civil War he was a member of the general assembly of Virginia and was made a Colonel in the Provisional Army of Virginia, in May, 1861. Promoted Brigadier General in March, 1862, he commanded Confederate troops in engagements at Carrick's Ford, Gloucester Point and in most of the battles of the Army of Northern Virginia. In 1863, he was placed in charge of the district of Savannah, Georgia and commanded the defenses on Morris island, South Carolina. He led a division in Florida and was put in command of the 7th Military District of South Carolina in 1864. In January, 1865, he was promoted Major General and was in command of the district of South Carolina until the end of the war. After the war, he was a member on the boards of the Virginia Military Institute, the Mechanical and Agricultural College of the State of Virginia.
