1932 - 2008
VETERAN

Beloved father, brother and friend! Longtime Bitterrooter Dick Bayles passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, of complications from prostate cancer. Dick fought the cancer like a lion off and on for 24 years before succumbing.

Dick was born in Townsend and grew up in the area. Dick was very active and well loved, earning the nickname "Polar Bear." Dick graduated from Broadwater County High School in Townsend in 1950.

Dick briefly attended the University of Florida before being drafted. He saw combat as a forward observer during the Korean War.

Dick returned to western Montana, working in the Bozeman and West Yellowstone areas. Dick went to Indiana Tech, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1959. Dick briefly returned to the Yellowstone area. He began courting Jane Winton before going to work in California.

Dick and Jane were married in West Yellowstone in May 1962, before they went back East. Dick attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a master's degree in civil engineering.

Dick and Jane went back to California, where he began working on maritime construction projects, eventually rising to project manager on major jobs along the West Coast.

Dick and Jane were loving and devoted parents, raising a son and daughter. They never missed a Little League game, an Indian Guides trip, recital, performance or Girl Scout meeting in all the their years.

Dick and Jane stayed in Southern California until retiring in 1994. They returned home to Montana, settling in the Bitterroot Valley on a small farm.

Dick and Jane continued to travel, making trips all over the country, Australia and Hawaii several times.

Dick enjoyed scuba diving and was an instructor. Dick and Jane fell in love with the ocean and spent much time there. They also loved the solace of the California desert. Dick continued to return to the desert every winter as long as his health permitted.

Dick passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon, surrounding by his loving children and siblings. Jane preceded Dick in 2004.

He is survived by his loving daughter Kate Bayles of Hamilton; son and daughter-in-law Jack and Gina Bayles of Denver; brother Tom Bayles of Hamilton; sister and brother-in-law Tom and Bev DeVine of Hamilton; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Lorraine Bayles of Hamilton; brother, Raymond Bayles of Hot Springs; and many, many friends.

Interment will follow at the Corvallis cemetery with military honors presented by the Corvallis American Legion.
