Son of Son of Max and Betti Uhlmann Hellman. Brother of Otto and Ernst Sigmund Hellman. (Ernst b 1897, emigrated to Chile on October 17, 1939.)

Richard fought in World War I and was awarded the German Iron Cross when he was wounded on the Russian front. He was a book merchant in the town of Wurzburg, Germany. He married Thea Sauter in 1923 and they had two children, Margot and Rainier. The family moved to Luxembourg to escape the Nazis, but Luxembourg fell under Nazi Rule in 1940. Sometime before 1923 he had converted to Catholicism, but the Nazi regime forced Richard to divorce Thea. He died September 29 or 30, 1942 in Auschwitz.

During the war he was in Fuenfbrunnen Camp, Luxembourg. Deported with Transport X/1, Train Da 72 from Dortmund, Arnsberg, Westphalia, Germany to Theresienstadt Ghetto, Czechoslovakia on July 29, 1942.

Deported with transport El from Theresienstadt Ghetto, Czechoslovakia to Auschwitz Birkenau,Camp on September 29, 1944.
