Cyrus was born to George Altman and his first wife, Barbara Shoup. Fought in the Civil War as a Private with Co. B, 38th Ohio Infantry. He enlisted on August 19, 1861. He also served as a flag holder for the GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC. His discharge came on July 12, 1865.
He married Libbie Irwin and they had 3 children: Ray, Otis and Myron.
