Anna Dorothea Giesecke Dege was a German immigrant from Hannover in Lower Saxony. Her first husband was Johann Heinrich Dege. She was the mother of Friedrich Wilhelm "Fred" Dege, Johann Heinrich "Henry" Dege, August Wilhelm Dege, Christian Dege, Louis Dege, and Charlotte Christiane Dege, the latter twins.

Her first husband's will was recorded in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 29, 1858, with her as executrix.

On April 27, 1871, she married Henry Goltermann, a widower, in St. Louis, Missouri. They soon moved to Holt or Atchison County, Missouri, where they lived their last years.

At the bottom of her tombstone is a quote from a poem by the Austrian poet Ludwig Halirsch (1802-1832):

"Das Mutterherz! Nur wer es kennt,
Wer recht vom Grund es kennt,
Der weiß, was man verliert an ihm,
Weiß, was kein Schmerz benennt."

"A mother's heart! Only he who knows it,
who truly knows it,
knows what he loses when it is no more,
knows nameless pain."

(freely translated by Geoffrey Decker)
