Vocalist. She was a founding member and original lead singer of the 1960s R&B group The Marvelettes. While attending Inkster High School in 1960, Horton formed the quintet along with Katherine Anderson, Juanita Cowart, Georgeanna Tillman and Georgia Dobbins; a school talent competition led to an audition with Motown Records and their signing with the company. They would achieve instant success with their hit "Please Mr. Postman", (reaching number one and earning gold record status in 1961); the song was further popularized by The Beatles' cover version a few years later. A string of additional Top-40 hits followed with "Playboy" (1962), "Beechwood 4-5789" (1962), "Too Many Fish in the Sea" (1964), "I'll Keep Holding On" (1965), and "Don't Mess With Bill" (1966). Horton departed in 1967, (replaced by Anne Bogan) to devote her time to family; she would on occasion return to the entertainment arena. She died of complications from a stroke.
