He was commanding officer of companies A, G and H, Third Regiment of Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He and his entire command of about 155 Union soldiers were wiped out in a fight near Centralia with Confederate guerillas led by Bloody Bill Anderson. Some accounts credit a young Jesse James with killing Major Johnston during the battle.
