History of Lewis, Clark, Knox and Scotland Counties Missouri, V.2 Biographical Appendix. Goodspeed Publishing, 1887, p. 997, 998
---I. J. Bitler, a prominent citizen of Knox County, was born August 4, 1843, and is a son of Samuel and Catherine (John) Bitler. The father was a native of Pennsylvania, and a resident of Ohio for about forty years, but came to Missouri in 1857, and located upon the farm where our subject now lives. Mr. Bitler died August 4, 1872. Mrs. Bitler was also a native of Pennsylvania, and was married to our subject's father in her native State. She is now living with her son. I. J., our subject, lived with his father until his death, taking care of him through his sickness, and afterward remained with his mother, and still lives upon the old home place which consists of 185 acres of good land, well improved and under a fine state of cultivation. December 20, 1866, he was united in marriage to Martha E. Clark, daughter of John L. Clark, and they are highly respected citizens. Our subject has always manifested an interest in political affairs and issues, and has held several offices of minor importance. In 1886 he was the regular nominee of the Republican party for the office of county sheriff, but was defeated, which, however, did not affect him materially as he was not an aspirant for political honors. He is an honorable member of the I. O. O. F. and G. A. R., and himself and wife are active members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is an enterprising and prosperous citizen, and greatly interested in public enterprises, to which he is a liberal contributor.

---I. J. Bitler was born in Lancaster, Ohio, August 4, 1845, departed this life September 26, 1914. He went to his former home to visit friends and have the attention and service of his former Physician and friend, Dr. H.O. Newton, never thinking of being called to his eternal home.
---He left his early home in Ohio at the age of fifteen and located in Knox County, Missouri. The war came on in his early manhood and being a loyal patriot, he served for a time in the state service then entered the Union Army where he served till the close of the war.
---He was married in 1866 to Mattie E. Clark of Peoria County, Illinois and brought his young wife to the farm that was his home and where he resided for over ten years. During this time he joined the I.O.O.F. Lodge and later the G.A.R., but it was the Methodist Episcopal Church that he devoted the most ardent service of his life.
---Failing health caused his removal to La Plata in 1899 where he resided for about eight years. He then moved to Larned, Kansas where the same spirit of service influenced him in the Church work in which he will be greatly missed.
---At the last he expressed himself as being glad to be at the home of his nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Williams who did everything possible for his comfort and restoration to health. His passing was very peaceful and beautiful. Just as the sun went down he entered the gates of the Celestial City.
---Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Episcopal Church, conducted by his old friend, Rev. J.L. Bilby of Barnard, Missouri, former pastor here. The I.O.O.F. lodges of La Plata and Novelty had charge of the burial services at the La Plata cemetery.
