CHARLES W. BATES
---This community was saddened when the news of the death of Charles W. Bates which occurred at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Bates in La Plata at 11:00 Wednesday morning, March 30, 1932, after and illness of several months. He became ill in October while working in Chicago for the Webber Chimney Company for which he had been a foreman for the past fifteen years and worked until January this year when he was compelled to give up the work and returned with his wife to his parent's home in La Plata where he hoped to regain his health, and all that loving hands could do was done but to no avail. He professed his faith in his Maker and was prepared to meet Him when the end came.
---Charles William Bates was born December 13, 1895 in La Plata, Missouri and died at the home of his parents here March 30, 1932.
---During the World War he served with the 89th Division, 34th Infantry and engaged in the following battles: Lucey Sector, St. Michael offensive, Envezin Sector, Muse Argonnes. He was sixteen months in the service twelve of which were spent in France and with the Army of Occupation in Germany.
---On April 11, 1929 he was married to Mattie Reynolds of Magnolia, Kentucky, who, with his father, mother, sister, Miss Julia May Bates, a teacher in Sioux City, Iowa schools, survive besides other relatives and many friends.
---Funeral services will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church Friday afternoon, April 1, at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Fred L. Hudson, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. J.L. Wood, pastor of the Methodist church. Veterans of the World War will act as pall bearers and will march in a body carrying in the funeral cartage the colors under which Mr. Bates fought, fourteen years ago.
