Barbara joined a brother and her parents, Calvin Archer and Nettie Ellen (Reed) Pepper November 13, 1937, in Erie, Pennsylvania. She spent her youth there. Her parents owned a grocery store, bar, and restaurant where she would work when she wasn't in school. Because of her experience there, the principal at her school asked her to work as a cashier during lunch at the school cafeteria.

She was married to Jerome John Riddle. They moved their family to the Westown Community in Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona, in August of 1964. They brought 5 children into the world. The marriage ended in divorce.

She worked at various jobs during her lifetime including caretaking. While caring for Wilma Norris, she was introduced to Wilma's nephew, Frederick Martin Ahrens. Some time after loosing his wife, Elaine (Raiber) Ahrens, July 16, 1997, Fritz decided to ask Barbara to marry him. They were married on November 6, 1998, in Maricopa County, Arizona. They spent almost thirteen years together. Fritz brought 4 adult sons and their families to the marriage. Fritz embraced her family as his and treated them as his own.

Barbara and Fritz enjoyed traveling, visiting family, and spending time together. Barbara was smart, witty, and deeply loved her family and cat. She was lucky with cards, a good cook, good housekeeper and enjoyed her collection of elephants. She and Fritz enjoyed watching Jeopardy and sports.

Barbara began a battle with breast cancer in 2006. It looked like she had beat it, however; it returned to her lungs and though she battled hard, she lost the battle at the age of 76, surrounded by family at her daughters home.

She was loved by her family and friends. She will live on in the hearts of those she has touched and nurtured while here on earth.

Barbara was proceeded in death by her parents, Calvin and Nettie; sister, Peggy Ellen Pepper; husband, Frederick Martin Ahrens; and stepson, Dean Roy Ahrens.

She is survived by two brothers and their families; two sons, three daughters, and their families; three stepsons and their families and the family of Dean; along with many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services were privately held on Sunday, October 19, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to Hospice of the Valley whom greatly helped in the end of her life.
