English Royal Colonial Governor. Born in Essex, England, he came to North America in 1633, and was elected to the General Court (legislature) of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634. He was then chosen its Governor the following year. After relocating to Hartford, Connecticut, John Haynes was elected as the first Royal Governor of Connecticut on April 11, 1639. He served in that capacity or as Deputy Governor almost continuously until his death.

John Haynes, was Governor of Massachusetts in 1635, but two years later removed to Hartford, Connecticut, where, in 1639, he was elected Governor of that State. Every alternate year he was elected to that position until about 1654. He owned in Hartford the property upon which stood the famous Charter Oak.
