U.S. Congresswoman, Connecticut Governor. She graduated Mount Holyoke College Massachusetts, in 1940 and during World War II, she served as assistant director of research for the War Manpower Commission of Connecticut. After the war, she was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, (1953-57), Connecticut Secretary of State, (1958-66) and was the first woman chairman of the Democratic State Platform Committee, (1956-68). In 1971, she was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-second and Ninety-third Congresses, serving until 1975. Not a candidate for reelection, she was elected as a Democrat as the 83rd Governor of Connecticut, serving (1975-80). In 1981, President Ronald Reagan posthumously awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was inducted into the National Woman's Hall of Fame in 1993 and inducted into the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame, in 1994.
