Professional Football Player. After graduating from North Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Robert George Cowan went to Indiana University. He lettered in basketball in 1943 and football in 1942 and 1946, with time off in between to join the Air Force. During World War II, he played football for the Salt Lake Army Air Base Wings in 1943 and the Lincoln Army Air Field Wings in 1944. After college, he played halfback and defensive back with the Cleveland Browns in 1947 and 1948 before being traded to the Baltimore Colts in 1949. The Browns and Colts were both members of the All-America Football Conference. The Browns won the league title both years Cowan played for them. In his three years in the pros, he caught 21 passes for a total of 351 yards. He scored five touchdowns. After his playing career ended, he was a high school teacher, coach, and administrator. He is the only athlete who has been inducted into three Indiana high school halls of fame—for track, football, and basketball.
