Professional Football Player. After garnering All-American honors at the University of Detroit, he was taken in the 1st round of the 1938 National Football League draft by the Washington Redskins. He was a fullback and defensive back from 1938 to 1944 for the Redskins. He finished his career with the Detroit Lions in 1945. In 1939, he led the NFL in scoring and was named All Pro. He helped lead the Redskins to an NFL championship in 1942. In 2002, he was named one of the 70 greatest players in Redskins team history. He is credited as the first player in the NFL to wear eye black. He scored 37 touchdowns in his 8 years in the NFL. He was elected to both the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the Ohio Sports Hall of Fame.
