Judith G. Dodge

Judith G. Dodge passed away peacefully Jan. 28, 2006, after successfully fighting colon cancer for more than a year.

She died at her home, with her loving family by her side. She was 59. Judy was raised in Ventura, CA, and was a resident of Piedmont for more than 20 years.

Judy was the longtime owner of Montclair Travel in Oakland, CA. Prior to buying the agency, Judy worked for many years in Oakland as a legal secretary at several firms including: Gwilliam & Ivary, McCarthy & Allen, the Eriksen and the Kincaid Law Firms.

Before her legal career, Judy flew around the world while working as a flight attendant. During the Vietnam War era, Judy worked on chartered aircraft which flew troops to and from the war zone. Judy strongly believed in "giving back" and was proud to have volunteered throughout her life in her community.

She counseled at Planned Parenthood in Oakland, tutored illiterate adults at the Oakland library, and donated many hours at Piedmont schools.

She served as president of Camp Fire, was co-leader of her daughter's Camp Fire troop, and also gave of her time with the Children's Support League.

She and her daughter Lindsey volunteered at many other charities through their work with the National Charity League.

She was also a member of the Bellevue Club. Judy had a lifetime love of travel, and was grateful to have lived in Spain and Italy for almost two years with her first husband and best friend, Larry Dodge.

Judy's greatest joy was her family, which included her "family of choice" made up of many dear friends who cherished and supported her.

She loved the good times and conversations at numerous "cross-generational" get-togethers with both friends and family throughout each year.

Judy is survived by her husband Hank Aasand; her loving daughters, Lindsey McCarthy and Katy McCarthy (and husband, Randy Strauss) and their sisters Christine McCarthy, Elizabeth McCarthy and brother John McCarthy.

The children's father, and love of her life, Martin F. McCarthy, predeceased Judy by 20 years.

Also surviving her are her sister and brother-in-law, Telva and Larry Koontz of Ventura. Aunt Judy will be lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews and their children: Joshua and Jamie, Trevor, and Trisha Koontz of Ventura; Danielle and Kyle Mitchell of Roseville; Sean and Michelle Martin of Fremont.

Judy was preceded in death by her sister, Gloria Martin. Judy graduated from Buena High School in Ventura.

She attended San Diego State University, as well as Mills College.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA 94611.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Alameda County Health Care Foundation, Critical Care Unit.
