Husband of Frances Farrell Armistead
Born to Alvie and Fannie (Byrne) Armistead and big sister (by 12 years) Mary Anderson Armistead Holliday. Both of Arthur's parents were deaf and his mother in late life also lost her vision, To communicate she would sign in your hand, just like Helen Keller. He quit school to help on the farm when his parents were in declining health, taking care of the bee hives producing honey. Arthur met my mother Frances one day when he went to Nashville to visit his sister, Aunt Mary. Frances lived next door to Aunt Mary and she was sitting outside on her back porch. Arthur was out in the back yard at Aunt Mary's and he saw mama and mama said he came jumping over the fence to meet her. He introduced himself and they became best friends marrying only 6 months later and remained best friends, husband and wife, for the next 59 and 1/2 years separated only by death. After they married, they had a son who was stillborn, Arthur Francis Armistead. They bought a small house in Donelson, a new and growing suburb of Nashville. Several years later they adopted me, Anita and then 2 years later they adopted my sister Karyn. Just prior to adopting my sister we moved to a bigger house in Donelson, the house I grew up in. Arthur worked for a company that made glass syringes and thermometers which was located in Donelson too. Arthur loved family, everything he did was to take care of his family. Arthur was a simple man, did not ever want for much, just enjoyed being at home with mama and us and worked hard at making a living. We went on vacation every year, usually a couple of vacations a year, went to Ohio, Michigan, Niagara Falls, Gatlinburg, Atlanta, Bowling Green and lots of other places around Tennessee. We grew up and both had children and Daddy loved his grandchildren. We had all of the holiday dinners at Grandpa and Grandma's house, the kids loved the family get togethers. Arthur and Frances were members of the donelson community for more than 50 years and they were members of the Donelson Church of Christ the entire time they lived in Donelson. In later life, with declining health, they moved to a retirement community in Donelson to finish their time here. They were very happy in their new home although it was hard for them to leave the home they had lived in for more than 40 years but the new house was setup to better accommodate their physical limits and needs.
