It is not know for sure when Joseph Immigrated to the United States, one US Census lists the year as 1886. A passanger manifest for the Normandie has a passanger by the name of Joseph Koenig sailing to New York, New York arriving on 12 Jul 1886.

Joseph first settled in St. Louis where he was married to his first wife. Her name is believed to be Mary Holloway, family history tells that she died soon after. No record can be found at this time. Joseph met and married Mary E. Hosenfelt, she was 14 years his junior. They settled in Bollinger Co., Missouri where Joseph took up farming. Mary would give birth to 9 children, with 6 making it to adulthood.

Joseph became a US Citizen on November 5, 1900.
