Actor. While starting his career as a child actor, it was through his friendship with Duke Kahanamoku, the Hawaiian surfing pioneer, that he got his first film role, in the 1925 film "Lord Jim". In 1934 he played Maureen O'Sullivan's nerdy teenage brother, expectant heir, and dilettante crime-solver Gilbert, in W.S. Van Dyke's "The Thin Man". He appeared as a hero in B-movies (mainly westerns), and as a character actor in films and on television; often playing villains. He was married to actress Grace Durkin in 1936.
