In 1934 he played Maureen O'Sullivan's nerdy teenage brother, expectant heir, and dilettante crime-solver Gilbert, in W.S. Van Dyke's "The Thin Man". He appeared as a hero in B-movies (mainly westerns), and as a character actor in films and on television; often playing villains. He was married to actress Grace Durkin in 1936.
