My great grandfather.

James Monroe Smith was born in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia on March 7, 1871 to Thomas Wright Smith and Julia Ann Cantrell.

He had seven siblings: William Erastus Smith, John Wooten Smith, George Thomas Smith, Andrew W. Smith, Absalom Alonzo "Abb" Smith, Minnie E. Smith and Sarah M.A. "Mattie" Smith.

His paternal grandparents were Absalom Smith and Elizabeth Catherine Foster and his maternal grandparents were Aaron Cantrell and Temperance Brand Davis.

He married his first wife Loula B. Watkins on July 31, 1890 in Scott County, Arkansas. They had one son, Albert Sidney Smith. She died in 1899.

He married his second wife, Mary Jane Powell, on August 9, 1900 in Scott County, Arkansas. They had five children: Ernest Earl Smith, Eria Bell Smith Bobbitt Bessie Gladys Smith Wood, Loye Dorothy Smith Murphy and Zerita Aldena Smith Benthall.

He was a music teacher when he met my great grandmother, Mary Jane Powell. She was his student.

He died on Thursday, March 30, 1939 in Jacksonville, Cherokee County, Texas. he was 67 years old.

His Texas Certificate of Death has the principal cause of death as Interstitial Nephritis (Kidney disorder).
