Nathan Thomas Avant was born in 1817 in Marion County, South Carolina to Francis Avant and Elizabeth Case.
He had five siblings: Catherine M. Avant Dumas, Mary Avant Downes, Nancy Ann Avant O'Neal, Lucy T. Avant Hall, and John C. Avant.
He married Theodocia Wilson on February 18, 1841 in Perry County, Alabama.
They were blessed with eight children: Thomas Avant, Emma Elizabeth Avant, Eliza Avant, Crawford Avant, Richard Nathan Avant, Elmira "Ella" Avant Hopper, Francis "Frank" Avant, and Joseph Jim Avant.
During the Civil War he was the master pilot of the side-wheeler packet steamship the Dr. Buffington which was sunk on the White River in December of 1862. The Dr. Buffington, and five other vessels, was sunk by Confederate forces to obstruct the channel of the White River and also to prevent capture by Union forces.
He died in 1886 in Henderson County, Texas.
