Widow of Robert L. Bates Had been Ill a Week with Pneumonia
Mrs. Martha A. Bates, aged 70 years, widow of the late Robert L. Bates, died Monday at 4 p.m. at the home of her son, Robert L. Bates, in Bellwood. She was taken ill with pneumonia a week ago Monday and gradually faded. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the home of the son. The remains will be placed in the vault at Rural cemetery, and will be taken to Macomb, St. Lawrence county for interment as soon as the condition of the road permits.
Mrs. Bates was born in the town of Macomb, daughter of Sylvester and Jane Hurst Washburn. She married Robert K. Bates, of Russell, 48 years ago and he died 43 years ago. She suffered a shock three years ago and has been a cripple, unable to walk.
She was a member of the Macomb and North Gouverneur Methodist Episcopal churches while living in St. Lawrence County.
